Η ταύτιση του σύγχρονου οικισμού Αφράτι (κεντρική Κρήτη) με το αρχαίο τοπωνύμιο Αρκάδες, η οποία προτάθηκε από τον D. Levi και έγινε γενικά αποδεκτή, στην πραγματικότητα δεν είναι ικανοποιητική. Η «Σύμβαση εργασίας» του Σπενσίθιου καθώς και πολλά άλλα τεκμήρια τοποθετούν μάλλον στη θέση αυτή την πόλη Δάτταλλα, της οποίας μελετάται η λειτουργία με βάση τόσο τις γραπτές πηγές όσο και τα αρχαιολογικά λείψανα. Η ιστορία της πόλης φωτίζεται από τη διερεύνηση της θέσης της στο πλαίσιο της γύρω περιοχής και ειδικότερα από τη μελέτη της επεκτατικής πολιτικής της Λύκτου, ήδη από την αρχαϊκή εποχή. Αποκαλύπτεται ότι η εξέλιξη των πόλεων της κεντρικής Κρήτης ήταν πολύ δυναμικότερη από όσο θεωρούσαμε έως σήμερα και επισημαίνονται ορισμένες αλλαγές που σημειώθηκαν σ' αυτές τον 6ο και τον 5ο αι. π.Χ. Συγκεκριμένα αποκαλύπτεται μια ανακατανομή των εδαφών, για την οποία υπάρχουν πολλά παράλληλα σε άλλες πόλεις του ελληνικού κόσμου, ενώ συγχρόνως γίνεται επιτακτική η επανεξέταση της εικόνας μιας αποκοιμη- μένης Κρήτης, στραμμένης αποκλειστικά στο παρελθόν, εικόνα που προβάλλεται τόσο από την αρχαία ιστοριογραφία όσο και από τις σύγχρονες ερμηνείες
