Molle W. T. M. (1977) Industrial mobility—a review of empirical studies and an analysis of the migration of industry from the city of Amsterdam, Reg. Studies 11, 323–335. Industrial migration has a direct influence on the creation of wealth on the regional as well as on the local level. It is, therefore, essential for regional and local policy makers to understand the factors that determine industrial location. In the Netherlands, compared to some other countries and particularly to the U.K., so far little research into industrial migration has been undertaken. The present study analyses the temporal, sectoral, and spatial patterns of industrial migration from the city of Amsterdam to the other municipalities of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. After a review of the relevant literature, in particular publications on operational explanatory models developed for the metropolitan level, the statistical material available on industrial migration from Amsterdam is analysed, and an attempt is made to explain the observed patterns with the help of some simple models. It will become apparent that the temporal migration pattern is related to the business cycle, the sectoral migration pattern to the sectors' dependence on transport and the average size of establishments; what municipality is chosen for re-location depends on such characteristics as the availability, quality, and price of industrial land, amenities, and distance from the city centre.
