It is argued that ‘rural’ and gemeinschaft should not be used as interchangeable terms and there are a number of overlapping continua between ‘rural’ and ‘urban’, variously defined. Lupri shows a statistical correlation related to settlement size but does not demonstrate the sociological significance of this. The contention that rural‐urban differences in W. Germany or U.S.A. are ‘crucial’ is questioned: there appears to be considerable ambiguity in his interpretation of his own work and also of other literature in the U.S.A. Further thoughts on this topic are considered in relation to the economic base and level of technology: the problem of scale and the occupational continuum are considered to be closely tied to the economic substructure. A recent attempt to measure urbanization is seen as a way of making the continuum an operational concept. However, recent criticisms of the reification of concepts are well taken and emphasis is still put on the relationships between the small‐scale and the large‐scale as an important field of study.
