Gomulka, ‘Polish Economic Reform: Principles, Practice, Prospects’, presented at the NASEES Annual Conference, Cambridge, 26–28 March 1983, and the other by J. Rostowski, ‘Economic Reform and the Prospects for Stabilization of the Polish Economy’, mimeo, 1982. The authors are grateful for useful comments they received at the LSE Seminar in Comparative Economics and Planning and at the Cambridge Conference. The paper also benefitted much from the authors’ visit to Poland and from criticisms by a number of Polish economists. Especially detailed and helpful were the criticisms by Leszek Balcerowicz, Ryszard Bugaj, Marek Dabrowski, Cezary Jozefiak, Jan Mujzel, Jerzy Osiatyński, and Zdzistaw Sadowski. Needless to say, the responsibility for errors of fact or interpretation that may still remain is ours alone
