There are loosening and pluralistic tendencies at work in the Soviet Union and in other Communist nations. These are the consequences of the unremitting pressures of an increasingly educated, technically skilled, and economically well-off population-pressures for privacy, pressures for dignity, pressures for professional, artistic and intellectual integrity, and for participation in decisions affecting their lives. These pressures will not bring about a free society with a multi-party system-but surely it will be a great deal looser than it is today. Gabriel Almond, 19641
