The author, a socialist since his student days (his memoirs were published as Stormy Passage (Vanguard Press, NY, 1961, the more extensive Russian version covering the period up to the time when he left Russia), was the editor of the Russian language daily Bor'ba published by the Menshevik Party of Georgia in Tiflis (now Tbilisi). The present account was published in six long installments in October (old style) 1918. Stormy Passage contains only a very condensed version (pp. 381–90) of these events. Woytinsky was later attached to the Diplomatic Mission of Georgia to Rome and became an economic statistician with a worldwide reputation. He emigrated subsequently to Berlin, where he organized and headed the statistical services of the Federation of Trade Unions, and then, via Geneva and Paris, to Washington where he became the statistician and Principal Economist of the Social Security Board.
