I) In the Polish postwar experience growth of consumption has been inversely proportional to the power of the Communist Party (CP). It may be that the Polish experience can be generalized to other countries of Eastern Europe. 2) In view of the apparent permanence of postwar CP rule in Poland, periods of unsatisfactory consumption performance could cause only a change in CP leadership or lead to a threat of such a change, rather than terminate CP rule as such
