This paper is a reassessment of the layout of the precincts of the bishops' palace in Bath brought about by new information obtained from recent excavations and documentary studies. These not only tend to confirm that the structures discovered in Swallow Street in 1984–85 were indeed the remains of the Norman bishop's palace, but that the outline of the precinct can now be more positively identified by means of the dimensions and descriptions mentioned in the medieval records. From these conclusions the possibility is discussed whether the palace precinct was designed on a modular plan, perhaps linked to the outline of the adjoining royal property around the King's Bath
