A Roman Timber Building on the Southwark Waterfront, London

Rescue excavations in 1987–88 on the site of Courage's Brewery, Southwark, near the River Thames in central London, uncovered the very well-preserved remains of a timber building, dated by dendrochronology to A.D. 152–53. The building, 4.7 m wide and at least 10.4 m long, was of timber frame construction, with base plates, post-and-plank walls, a floor of sawn planks below contemporary ground level, to which there was a ramped entrance, and indications of a simple pitched roof covered with shingles. The building is interpreted as a relatively low-cost short-lived warehouse, perhaps for foodstuffs. All the timbers used were oak, including some grown on coppice stools, which implies productive management of woodland near London as early as the late first century
