The Drystone Walls of Roystone Grange

A survey of drystone field walls was made at Roystone Grange (Derbyshire), as part of the research project which was focused upon this dry upland valley in the southern part of the White Peak. Five phases of enclosure walls were identified belonging to the second millennium b. c., the Romano-British period, the high middle ages, the early modern period, and the agricultural revolution. The paper also describes banks, gates, stiles and sheep-creeps associated with the field walls. The discussion of this survey serves as an introduction to a series of detailed papers on the prehistoric, Romano-British and medieval farming communities at Roystone Grange
