The building accounts for Plymouth Citadel show that the claims for Thomas Fitch as designer of the baroque great gate of the Citadel are improbable and that Sir Bernard de Comme as the creator of the fortress is most likely to have been responsible. De Gomme's working relationship with the Governor of Plymouth, the Earl of Bath, suggests that he might also have been involved in some way with the Great House of Stowe in north Cornwall in the late I670s
