This paper critiques a mathematical measure (Arnolds Measure) of the effect of sex preference on fertility and contraceptive use. The author feels that such an equation gives an underestimate of the effect of sex preference as a result of the presence of heterogeneity in sex preference. In practical situations some heterogeneity in preferences is expected particularly at the higher parities in any population. Rural Bangladesh is an example where preference for sons and preferential treatment of male children is unusually high
