This essay is Fred Arnolds response to a criticism of Arnolds mathematical model which measures the effect of sex preference on fertility. The model was applied to Korea explicitly because the population of that country is very homogeneous and son preference is very pervasive. In addition overestimation is likely to occur due to sample variability and a risk factor where a couple with a particular preference avoids having another child because of fear of having a child of the wrong sex. These overestimations would work to offset any underestimation caused by heterogeneity of sex preference. Under the normal range of circumstances encountered in developing countries the overall bias discussed should be minimal
