The "Double Decision" Makes Sense -- But for Whom? A Reply to Herf

In his diatribe against the European peace movement, Herf invokes nearly every argument summoned up by right-wingers in the U.S. to counter it. Because Herf's article was deemed worthy of publication, there is still apparendy a need to refute such slander. Herf makes three basic assumptions: that the Soviet Union poses a threat to the U.S., that this creates the need to rearm, and that inasmuch as the European peace movement ignores these facts, it is hopelessly naive. Before turning to the specifics of his argument, though, the very method he uses requires some comment. Herf apparently feels no need to go beyond the competence he acquired from journals such as Commentary or Foreign Affairs
