EDGE Theodore Wagenaar extends an invitation to readers to engage in a conversation about the merits of using a national, externally graded essay exam to assess undergraduate students. This invitation is appropriate, given that there are few comprehensive assessment instruments in sociology and none, to my knowledge, that has been endorsed by the American Sociological Association. Perhaps, through a collective dialogue we can arrive at a reasonable assessment instrument that can be used by a variety of sociology departments. Wagenaar's ambitious proposal is timely given the increasing external and internal pressures sociology departments are experiencing regarding the development of assessment methods. As Wagenaar and others have noted, undergraduate assessment is a priority of accreditation agencies and many college administrators (Weiss 2002; Senter 2001). But beyond this externally imposed pressure to engage in assessment activities, assessment can inform internal discussions
