L'A repond a un article critique de Ron Brunton (The Hindmarsh Island Bridge and the credibility of Australian anthropology, paru dans la revue Anthropology Today, aout 1996) qui l'accusait d'avoir apporter une position ideologique et non analytique lors de la manifestation de protestation d'un groupe de femmes de langue Ngarrindjeri de la region du Murray dans le Sud de l'Australie. Ces femmes revendiquaient l'arret d'un projet de construction d'un pont entre l'ile Hindmarsh et la ville de Goolva. Elles affirmaient que cette construction violait leurs representations cosmogoniques et les pratiques rituelles traditionnelles liees aux lieux sacres qui seraient bouleverses par le chantier de construction. La question centrale de Brunton sur cette polemique etait de savoir si ces femmes avaient cree de toute piece une tradition et une croyance pour bloquer la construction du pont et en quoi les anthropologues australiens avaient soutenu cette presumee imposture intellectuelle
