Growing up as a young man in the 1990s, the only images of gay men confronting me were highly caricatured representations. These men were only interested in sex, alcohol, drugs and parties. I do not remember seeing images of daily life, the struggles we all go through. These memories shape my work and encourage me to explore the ways in which gay men live with the trials and tribulations that we all endure. This piece is one such exploration. (RE-) CONCEPTUALIZATION ISSUES Undoubtedly, the interest in the study of intimate partner violence (IPV) among men who have sex with men (MSM) is increasing. Most researchers are in consensus that the prevalence rate of IPV among MSM is roughly equal to (Peterman and Dixon 2003; Bailey 1996) or slightly higher than (Tjaden, Thoennes andAllison 1999) the prevalence rate among heterosexuals. However, we know relatively little concerning MSM-IPV as compared to heterosexual IPV. This is partially because most conceptualizations of MSM-IPV are contingent on heterosexual- and feminist-based frameworks of IPV (Letellier 1994 & 1996). Without denying that similarities exist, several researchers (e.g., Letellier 1994 & 1996; Peterman and Dixon 2003; Miller, Bobner and Zarski 2000) recognize significant differences in the contexts in which MSM-IPV and heterosexual IPV occur. Nevertheless, the increasing level of knowledge concerning MSM-IPV is promising and deserves closer examination. What follows is a systematic, integrative review of the existing literature concerning correlates of and interventions for MSM-IPV. In addition, a possible conceptual framework of MSM-IPV is developed and discussed. Finally, I address the voids left in the literature, directions for future research, and the implications of MSM-IPV as a public health concern
