What was distinctive about the concept of a socio-technical system that was developed in these studies was the way in which it overlayed a meticulous dissection of the labor process, its stages, divisions and relations of command, with an equally fine-meshed network of intra-psychical, inter-individual, and inter-group forces, tensions, conflicts, and anxieties. Trist and his colleagues thus claimed that the technology did not determine the relations of work. (Rose 1989,91)
