It beyond doubt that l1Q14 1 ii and 4Q285 1 (the blessing section) preserve a virtually identical text. Nevertheless, W.J. Lyons has argued that, in spite of this overlap, the manuscripts 1lQ14 and 4Q285 need not be copies of the same composition and speculated on the possibility that the blessing was an older separate section that was incorporated into 4Q285.' In DJD 23 the editors of 1 Q14 joined some small fragments to the column (1 1Q14 1 i) preceding the blessing (1 1Q14 1 ii) and claimed that the text of some of the lines of I lQ14 1 i overlapped with 4Q285 5.2 On this basis they positively identified 4Q285 and llQ14 as two copies of the same composition. In a response to the publication of DJD 23, Lyons proposed a new reconstruction of 4Q285 1, questioned the certainty of the overlap between 4Q285 5 and I IQ14 1 i, and stated that he remains unconvinced of the editors' assertion that the manuscripts were copies of the same composition.3 Lyons's new reconstruction of 4Q285 1 a reaction to the editors' statement that there may be a variant between the texts, because if 4Q285 1 9 is reconstructed on the basis of 1 1Q14, it has fifteen letters4 more than the average in the preceding lines.5 Lyons bases his calculation on a reconstruction of 4Q285 1 similar to one he had published previously,6 but his new reconstruction would show that there
