Francophonie: Gain in Humanity or Loss of Identity? Since the first Summit of French-speaking countries in Paris in 1986, there is a new discourse about Francophonie. This article argues that the new discourse continues to either overlook or misinterpret the facts and cannot extricate itself from the simplistic and polarizing dichotomy according to which Francophonie is either a "gain in humanity" or a "loss of identity". This author suggests that Francophonie is neither and that the time has come to accept the linguistic realities of Francophone Africa for what they are and, at the same time, to realize that Francophonie partakes of the natural process of human evolution.
