Despite an increasing supply of population data of high geographic resolution, researchers often must be content with data compiled for pre-defined areas. This means that fictitious effects will emerge in studies of population change in different geographic categories (e.g., rural/urban or metropolitan/nonmetropolitan). The number and shape of areas used for data compilation will influence the results of such studies. Here, these effects are scrutinized using Swedish coordinate-based data, which have been applied in both a geography tailored to monitoring urban versus rural population change, and then, for comparative purposes, aggregated to several pre-defined subdivisions of the country. It is concluded that the fictitious effects might influence the results noticeably and therefore need to be considered; this task would require a constant-criteria approach to be able to control the effects of changes in the geography (e.g., the expansion of urban areas).
