Policy makers and census data users across the United States are calling for revision of the definitions of urban and rural population and places currently used by the U.S. Census Bureau. They contend that the definitions are outdated and do not reflect the current realities of population distribution, life-styles, and settlement patterns. Thus, the dichotomous sociological model of urban/rural is no longer appropriate for classifying either the American population or the geographical hierarchy of places. Several approaches are presented in this paper as possible alternatives for redefining urban/rural, along with conceptual and theoretical considerations
