Although theorists suggest that socialization as well as the aging process must be different for men and women, systematic research has not been able to specify the implications or significance of these sex differences in relation to feelings of well‐being. This study responds to the problem by focusing on the conditions, opportunities, and subjective evaluations of elderly women living in two neighborhoods of different socioeconomic status and by analyzing the relationship between these variables and scores on a life satisfaction scale. Results of data analysis, discussed in relationship to hypotheses, suggest that condition variables are more significantly related to life satisfaction scores for women in the lower socioeconomic status neighborhood; opportunity variables are not significantly related to life satisfaction scores for women in either neighborhood when controls are applied; and subjective evaluation variables are significant predictors in both neighborhoods. Findings are related to other research in the area, and suggestions for further research are included
