Two years after Turner's death in 1932, Paul Wallace Gates published his first book, a study of the Illinois Central Railroad's colonization efforts. Its appearance signaled a new level of interest and analysis in the examination of the public domain.29 Gates would go on to analyze the varying influences of the public lands on our national life over two centuries and across most of the continent, doing work over fifty years that Turner never eagerly pursued.
