Postcolonial scholars have explored the relations between European discourses of modernity and Empire in ways that challenge the notion that western modernity was a benevolent project, aimed at globalizing projects of civilization and progress across western and non-western polities. They conventionally depict South Asians as victims of the incursions of European modernity while also locating the provenance of modernity in the West. Reading Amitav Ghosh's The Glass Palace, this essay challenges both notions by exploring how native subjects not only willingly engaged with and negotiated European modernity, but also participated in socio-cultural, political and economic practices that suggest particularly native modernities
