On November 18, 1918, Jews around the world were gathering in the company of their families to light the first Chanukah candle of the year 5679. That year, Chanukah had a special meaning in many parts of the world. It was the first Jewish holiday after the end of the world war, into which hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers throughout Europe had also been drawn, many of whom did not return. The war had just ended, the Czar and the Kaiser had been toppled, and new democratic states arose. In Germany Jews wanted finally to achieve not only full equality before the law but also de facto equality in society; in Eastern Europe, they were fighting as a national minority for a far-reaching cultural and legal autonomy; and in Palestine the new British rulers promised them their own national homeland
