The papers published in this issue of Contributions were initially written for a Colloquium held (virtually) at Cambridge on 24 and 25 September 2021. The motivation for the Colloquium was to assess (i) the debates that have coalesced around the development of models of price determination subsequent to earlier debates on capital theory and (ii) the empirical studies emanating from the application of those models. Theoretical developments had focussed on the further investigation of the characteristics of linear pricing models, while the direction of theoretical research had in large part been stimulated by new (unexpected) empirical results. As will be evident, the new work has generated a good deal of controversy, some focussed on the earlier debates on the logical consistency of neoclassical capital theory, and some concerned with ‘where do we go from here?’. All this has considerably enhanced the understanding of the determination of prices in a competitive market economy
