Albert O. Hirschman was a giant of social science in the 20th century and a courageous human being. Michele Alacevich’s intellectual biography is a complement to the Adelman’s more detailed account of Hirschman’s life, published in 2013. Alacevich provides a remarkable summary of Hirschman’s work, and an assessment of his legacy, in a mere 270 pages of text. In his early work, Hirschman pioneered analysis of the role of national power in international economic relations, thus extending the standard theory of international trade. He was an early supporter of European integration. Though he initially advocated a comprehensive qualification of national sovereignty, through the creation of supranational institutions, he soon saw this as a naive invocation of a deus ex machina.
