This book consists of five chapters, each of the first four is devoted to one of the economists of major importance for the ‘surplus approach’ to the theory of income distribution and value, namely Smith, Ricardo, Marx, and Sraffa. The fifth chapter contains the author's remarks about the possible existence of a ‘classical standpoint’ and its interpretations. The book can be read at various levels and is accordingly of interest both for those approaching these questions for the first time and for more advanced scholars. With the exception of the fifth, which is very short, every chapter is divided in two parts, the first of which addresses some key features of the work of the economist in question and presents the author's opinions. The second takes the secondary literature into account and outlines various possible interpretations and criticisms. The chapter on Marx, which makes about one-third of the entire book
