I investigate some texts taken principally from Aristotle's Physics, in order to analyze the manner in which mathematics is used in that work. The discussion focuses on the notion of proportionality, for it gave rise to certain modernized interpretations of Aristotle's doctrine. I show that science in Antiquity does not truly succeed in treating speed in itself as a physical "magnitude " and that on the other hand the idea of "force", for other reasons, does not have all of the characteristics of this notion of "magnitude" either. It follows that the modernized interpretations are at least inexact and rash
