1 'Is Donatus's Commentary on Virgil Lost?,' CQ (1916), particularly p. 164. 2 Servius Auctus is the conflation of Servius with another early commentary written probably in the second half of the fourth century. The conflation was probably made in England in the seventh century. The earliest extant fragment of Servius Auctus is written in Anglo-Saxon cursive minuscule of the first half of the eighth century. The fragment, listed as no. 1806 in the Supplement to C.L.A., was found in Spangenberg, which is near Fulda, the source also of several other manuscripts of Servius Auctus. I follow standard practice in referring to the conflated commentary as DS, and to the non-Servian early comment, before or after its use in Servius Auctus, as D. The conflater and essential author of DS I call the Compiler. All references to Servius and Servius Auctus in this paper are to the Harvard Edition for Aen. 1-5 (including Servius's Life of Virgil, which, together with his preface to the Aeneid, begins his commentary), and to Thilo's edition for comment on Aen. 6-12 and on the Eclogues and Georgics. The full references to these editions are: E. K. Rand et al., Servianorum in Vergilii carmina commentariorum editionis Harvardianae volumen II (Lancaster 1946), which contains comment on Aen. 1-2; A. F. Stocker and A. H. Travis, Servianorum in Vergilii carmina commentariorum editionis Harvardianae volumen III (Oxford 1965), which contains comment on Aen. 3-5; Georg Thilo, Servii Grammatici quiferuntur in Vergilii carmina commentarii II (Leipzig 1883-84), which contains comment on Aen. 6-12, and III.1 (Leipzig 1887), which contains comment on the Eclogues and Georgics. Volume III.2 of the last, ed. H. Hagen, contains the Appendix Serviana, including Philargyrius, the Brevis Expositio, and the Scholia Veronensia cited in this paper. Numbers in parentheses after citations from Thilo or Hagen refer to the pages and lines of the appropriate volumes of these editions. In printing comments of Servius and Servius Auctus, I follow the practice of the Harvard Edition of printing Servius Auctus on the left side of the page, Servius on the right when they differ, and printing the comment across the page when Servius Auctus and Servius agree. It was Thilo's practice to print non-Servian comment of DS in italics, but he
