When we try to define which could be the "images of Africa in Brasil" in the eyes of Brasilian social scientits, the answers relate more specifically to the components of a national identity. The Indian, the White and the Black compose a tripod upon which national culture is based, nevertheless the main debate focuses on Blackness. This fact reveals undoubtedly a deep ambiguity in terms of the relations maintained between the local various corporate groups. When we are taking in account the expressions relative to what would constitute an "Afrobrasilianity" legitimated in references with African origins, we clearly perceive that those references belong more to the domain of fantasy than to historical facts, and even less, to anthropological ones. Eventually, the main questioning seems to be the elimination of a burdening historical past (obscure African origins, scars of slavery, circumstances of half-breding) for the benefit of a national identity defined in terms of the dominating white society
