Annie Ibrahim : The status of anomalies in Diderot's philosophy. When discussing monstrous organisms, Diderot uses contemporary vocabulary ; however, the term «anomaly », although an anacronism, would be more exact, not in order to make him a «precursor » of teratology, but to emphasize the fact that for him monsters are the result of pure chance, accidental deviations, subject to no norms. Attempting to provide a materialistic and «vitalistic » theory of these disorders, Diderot proposes two metaphors ; games of chance and natural grafts are models for the formation of monsters, seen in turn as a prototype for the production of living beings. Diderot thus describes both art remodelling Nature while obeying its laws, and a medical Utopia developing the infinite possibilities of modification of living forms
