Childbearing and rearing activities of 160 Maranao mothers were described and an emphasis on protection and pride was inferred as the guiding goals of these families for their children. The Maranao are a conservative Muslim group in the southern Philippines. Following beliefs which they share with many other Filipinos, they observe both traditional and scientific practices to avoid birth defects, facilitate uncomplicated delivery, protect the child and mother from evil spirits, and help the child develop courage and family pride. The argument was advanced that neither Filipino nor Western readers will understand what we see among the Maranao if we interpret their behavior within an alien conceptual system and assume that Maranao mothers have the same goals for their children as do Western mothers
