A propos of a recent work on Fermat by M. S. Mahoney, the author, after giving several details about the works of 16th and 17th century mathematicians (Clavius and Albert Girard in particular), stresses Fermaťs « adégalité » and the different meanings Fermat gives to that term. He then shows the fundamental use made by Fermat in the calculus of infinitesimals of the concept of « affinité », long before Euler introduced that word into mathematics. Finally, he clears up several questions relating especially, to « Cavalieri's principle. »
