The important place given to murderers and to short articles criminals in Pierre Larousse 's Dictionnaire Universel can seem rather surprising. Whole colums are devoted to the most famous crimes of the century, from Fualdes to Troppmann, as well the publications which assured the development of the Petit Journal's readership. Larousse's venture, undertaken at the time popular press was being developed, missed nothing in order to establish customer loyalty amongst his readers, and delivery after delivery, kept them up to date with what was going on at that time. However, the encyclopaedia also took on an educational and civic role, trying to integrate a real space for the public, and for modem democracy, into the world of knowledge. This is how crime 's stakes appear in the world of the lexicologist
