On the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Independence of Mozambique, Hispanic Research Journal is honoured to publish the lecture given by His Excellency the High Commissioner of the country, Mr António Gumende, on 12 February 2009, at Queen Mary, University of London. The event, which further included a photographic display of the various stages of Mozambique's turbulent history, also marked the trajectory of consolidation and expansion of the teaching of Portuguese and related cultures at Queen Mary. Whilst expressing his thanks for the honour of having been invited to lecture at the College, the High Commissioner surveyed his country's historical trajectory from the early period of colonization and occupation, through the tragic periods of the wars of independence and destabilization, to the shining example of reconciliation, democracy, and development that Mozambique represents in our day. The Ambassador thanked the academic audience for the chance to share his insights with them and invited them to fill in possible gaps in his brief overview of what is a complex and multifaceted History
