Goguet's De l'origine des lois, des arts et des sciences , et de leurs progrès chez les anciens peuples, published lavishly in 1758, is characterised by a strange ambivalence. It sticks to the Biblical chronology and constantly appeals to Providence to explain historical change ; nevertheless Goguet is writing a profane history of civilisation created by humans, in which the Bible is read as a history of law, science and technology. Thus he arrives at genetic explanations which are surprisingly differentiated and systematised, breaking with linear causality. The range of subjects studied and the comparison of differing ways of life produce a general cultural history of Antiquity. Thanks to its wealth of historical documentation, scrupulous use of sources and theoretical treatment of the subject, this almost forgotten work deserves to be rediscovered
