Ethnicity, commonly understood to be a group identity based on shared culture, became a central topic for sociocultural anthropology in the 1960s. The works of Clifford Geertz and Fredrick Barth established the classic debate within and outside anthropology between primordial and situational theories of ethnicity. The voluminous literature since offers a range of theories to account for the unrelenting forces of ethnicity accompanying the modern era. Anthropologists explore the modern constitution of identities that need to claim premodern heritage in order to be seen as authentic and, therefore, legitimate. Anthropologists link ethnicity to structural inequalities and emphasize contextual and historical factors, such as the rise of nation‐states, globalization and neoliberal regimes, enduring colonial racial classifications, and the global reach of liberal ideologies that promise equality through recognition of cultural difference in order to understand the significance of cultural identities
