This article focuses on The Seventh Garment by the Greek author Eugenia Fakinou, and claims that, first appearances notwithstanding, the novel is not just a tale about the reclamation of Greek roots. Rather, it is a re‐writing of Greece's national history, not as a series of wars and triumphs, but, most importantly, as a collective recounting of common pains. The novel's women narrators articulate a comprehensive conception of history as a universal experience of conflict, tragedy and loss. Thus, it is suggested that Fakinou's novel is part of a recent, and revisionist return of fiction to history, with female novelists often embarking upon a ‘re‐imagining ‘ of history as the wholeness of personal and public experiences
