IDEOLOGISTS AGAINST THE EXCESS OF WORDS Volney, in Les Ruines ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires (1791) and Cabanis, in Rapports du Physique et du Moral de l'homme (1802), consider the excess of words (which is not only verbal exaggeration) as a particularly efficient instrument of mastery over the people by priests (of all religions) and by tyrants. Both of them are the archetype of charlatans. As a matter of fact, the charlatannerie, as Diderot says, is based upon the excess of rhetorical figures, therefore of words which constantly appeals to imagination. It contributes to put human reason (the human being in society) out of itself. That failure of humanity permits all the fanatisms. That is the reason why the ideologist must be first and foremost a pedagogue the control eloquence
