Some engravings published in 1690, 1707 and 1712 provide valuable information about dovecotes and other ancillary buildings. Today, where dovecotes survive, they are isolated or are in totally changed surroundings, and most have been altered for secondary uses. The engravings record them in their contemporary contexts before the modern alterations. At that period, many dovecotes were changing from vernacular to 'polite' architecture, and more windows and dormers were being provided. These engravings show how far the changes had progressed
