Documentary sources remain a neglected area of vernacular studies. The analysis of the accounts for two buildings a short distance apart in rural Buckinghamshire attempts to explore the process of building at this level in the early modern period and to respond to some of the broader issues raised by Christopher Dyer at the 1996 Winter Meeting. It is offered as a contribution to the current debate on the future direction of the subject
