Timber in the roofs of the great halls at Abington Hall, Boughton House and Upton Hall has been sampled for dendrochronological analysis. The roof at Abington is of single hammer-beam construction. Those at Boughton and Upton, along with that formerly over the hall at Fawsley, form a distinct group of late-medieval hall roofs characterised by principal and intermediate collar-beam arch-braced trusses. Cusped bracing within the trusses, cusped wind-braces, moulded purlins and mullion infill are also characteristic features. Construction dates fall within the following ranges: Abington, 1481–1507; Upton, 1503–1522; Boughton, 1509–1541. Lack of absolute precision in the dendrochronological dating, arising from the absence of complete sapwood, coupled with the presence of a number of potential owner-builders make it impossible to identify precisely either the names of the builders or the dates of construction of these halls
