The seventeenth century was only two years old when the first mission from an Indonesian state to a European power arrived in the Netherlands. It had been dispatched by Sultan Alauddin Riayat Syah of Aceh to the court of Prince Maurice. The leader of the mission, Abdul Hamid, died on 9 August 1602, while in the Netherlands and was buried ceremoniously in Middleburg. In Aceh, this mission has assumed some significance as evidence of the antiquity of its relations with what was to become the colonial power
