H. G. Wells' Implacable Law of Nature, 'Adapt or perish' (1939), is adopted by the authors as their fundamental text and explored in some depth as it applies to men, women and children in present Western society. The dynamic of change, as brought about by the increasing speed of scientific and technological development, is the basic concept and has occasionally led to a remaking of a culture. Adapting to change is much more difficult, stress leading to strange cults, but it could be eased if the search for a secure sense of self was more successful, hindered as it is by a breakdown of cultural structures. The challenge of leisure and full use of our creativity could make change potentially much more beneficial, and it is concluded that Fraternity, above all else, would allow us to master the accelerating rate of change
