This article considers the effects of North Sea exploitation on the environment, both in the mainland and in islands, and the converse eftects of the environment on exploitation. It discusses the extremely exacting North sea environment in its effect on operational safety, both human and structural. It deals with the problems of North Sea pollution, whether by oil itself or by various forms of waste discharge from land. It looks at traditional and modern sea uses, and emphasizes the different forms of cooperation, both national and international, that are needed. The new problems arising from hydrocarbon exploitation in the North Sea exemplify a larger theme: the importance and tbe feasibility, of reconciling the numerous different sea uses, old and new, within a concept of Multiple Sea Use. This is akin to the concept of Multiple and Use which play an important part in modern town and country planning
