In summary I am suggesting, therefore, that greening geography, particularly geography as a social science, involves considerable challenges for higher education. A Green agenda for higher education calls into question the academic division of labour between separate disciplines. A green political geography will need to draw on the insights of a political ecology approach. It will need to discuss a variety of issues from a variety of disciplines: from sociology, the study of new social movements; from economics, the limits to growth and the causes of world poverty; and from politics, the study of pressure groups, the state, and world power. As I have suggested above, this sort of call goes with the grain of much current work in the social sciences. However, I would also want to argue that we be cautious in adopting and teaching Green matters. Just as for the study of any other critique of existing society or of any other view of the social ideal, so we should expect our students to be critical in their appraisal of Green ideas: there is certainly scope for it
