Archaeology needs explicit statements relating each question to the data examined' (or perhaps vice versa?) 'and detailing the relevance of one to the other' (Hiscock 1982b:106). Hiscock Is unremitting in demanding such rigour of others, and we are entitled to expect that his own discussions will meet the highest standards of rigour, clarity, and even accuracy. I shall comment first on apparently trivial inconsistencies and inaccuracies in these two notes; then on the general lack of rigour and clarity in argument of which these 'minor' muddles appear symptomatic
