Assessing erosion of submerged occupation sites by high energy water flow is of paramount importance in underwater prehistoric investigations. Surge, waves, currents and tidal action in marine waters generally have far more destructive power than water flow and waves in estuaries and rivers. Fresh-water lakes provide still gentler conditions favouring the preservation of underwater sites, e.g. the series of former open air sites preserved on the floor of Lake Jasper (34°25'S, 115°40'E) in the far south-west of Western Australia (Dortch 1997a). Yet even there investigators had to take into account the possibility of stone artefacts being redeposited by wind-generated waves (Dortch and Godfrey 1990:30-1)
